Prescription-Only Medicines Account for 95.8% of the Pharmacy Market in Spain
Dublin - Research and Markets has announced the addition of the new Espicom title “Spain Generics Market Intelligence Report” to their offering
“The Spanish pharmaceutical market is the fifth largest in the EU-15 and the eighth in the world, annually growing at an average rate of 10%, a growth only comparable to the UK in the EU-15. By 2004, pharmaceutical expenditure at retail prices is valued at around 15.3 billion euros, or 10.9 billion euros at manufacturers’ prices. Prescription-only medicines (POM) account for 95.8% of the pharmacy market, whereas the OTC market is reduced to 4.2% of the market. Generics represent 4.5% of the pharmacy POM market. Drug prices in Spain are among the cheapest in the EU-15 (after France), contributing to the European pharmaceutical parallel market. However, government cost-containment policies aim at controlling public pharmaceutical expenditure, which currently accounts for around 22% of total public expenditure. Current initiatives include the inclusion of 2,070 new drugs for reference pricing in January 2004, which represent a market of 1.6 billion euros affecting over 100 manufacturers with 90% of the total market.
On the back of the industry’s increasingly strong market position - driven by favourable political environments and the number of medicines losing patent protection - industry and investors are re-evaluating the role the generics sector will play in the pharmaceutical industry of the future. Concise reports on the worlds major drug markets, with an emphasis on those most receptive to generics. Information is provided on the generic market, patent laws, pricing & reimbursement policies and other recent developments, where applicable.

NEW YORK_A federal judge Tuesday permanently blocked a Canadian maker of a cheap generic version of blood thinner Plavix from marketing the drug, saying its version infringed on a valid patent for Plavix.
U.S. District Judge Sidney H. Stein said Apotex Inc. had failed to prove during a trial in Manhattan that lasted from Jan. 22 through Feb. 15 that the patent was invalid. He said damages will be set in an amount to be determined at future proceedings.
Last year, Stein had granted a request by Sanofi-Aventis, the holder of a patent on Plavix, to stop Apotex from producing the generic drug, which had gained a majority of market share after its launch last summer.
But Stein allowed Plavix to continue selling a six-month supply of product that Apotex had already shipped to distributors in the United States.
In Tuesday’s opinion, Stein said Sanofi had shown it was likely to suffer irreparable price erosion, loss of goodwill and a negative impact on the amount of research devoted to developing other medical uses for Plavix if sales of the generic version are allowed.

LANSING , Mich., June 18 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Prescription drug prices “very important” to most Michiganians A statewide EPIC-MRA poll of 600 Michigan voters, completed on June 13th , shows an 85 percent majority agreeing the price of prescription drugs is “important” to their families.
All respondents were asked if they were aware the Michigan Department of Community Health has, since last year, maintained a website that lists prices charged by different pharmacies in each community for the 30 most popular prescription and some non-prescription drugs. Only 12 percent said they were “aware” of this site, with 79 percent saying they were “not at all aware” of it.
An overwhelming majority (87 percent) said they favored legislation to require expansion of the Michigan website, from the current 30 prescription drugs to at least 150, including generic substitutes, with prices listed.
